A Day in Walthamstow: My Favourite Local Spots Between Appointments

As a mobile hairdresser, one of the perks of my job is getting to move around and experience London in ways most people don’t. And there’s one area that always gives me a little buzz of joy whenever I see it pop up on my calendar: Walthamstow.

Creative, community-minded, and full of character, Walthamstow is one of East London’s most underrated gems. Between house calls and hair transformations, I’ve carved out a list of favourite places where I grab a bite, breathe in some beauty, or just take five. So whether you’re local, visiting, or just curious—here’s how I love spending a day in Walthamstow between appointments.

☕ Morning Magic: Perky Blenders (CRATE St James Street)

My first appointment of the day is usually around 9am, but before that, I need coffee. Not just any coffee—Perky Blenders at CRATE is my go-to. Tucked away just off St James Street Station, this local roastery nails the art of a flat white. The vibe is chilled, the playlist is always on point, and the coffee is ethically sourced.

Bonus: I often pick up a bag of beans for clients who ask me what smells so good in my kit bag. Guilty.

🍞 Late Breakfast Bite: Today Bread

After a morning session of trims and blow-dries, I usually get hungry around 11. If I’m near Hoe Street or Walthamstow Central, I’ll pop into Today Bread, a bakery and café inside the Central Parade co-working hub. They serve the most incredible sourdough toasties—my favourite is the mushroom and cheese melt.

There’s something about the open-plan layout and big windows that helps me recharge. Plus, I’ve picked up a few product tips here from other creatives working nearby. Walthamstow folk are generous with their recs!

🎨 Midday Wander: William Morris Gallery

With some gaps between afternoon appointments, I sometimes sneak in a visit to the William Morris Gallery in Lloyd Park. It’s calm, inspiring, and a true Walthamstow landmark. Morris’s work with pattern, design, and craftsmanship hits close to home—he was, in a way, the original stylist.

The park outside is also perfect for a peaceful moment under the trees, especially if I’ve been on my feet all morning. On sunny days, I’ll even stretch out on the grass for a quick lunch.

🛍️ Quick Shop Stop: Wood Street Market

Need a little quirky retail therapy? Wood Street Market is my secret spot for grabbing unique pieces—everything from vintage jewellery to art prints to second-hand vinyl. I’ve even found a few fun hair accessories here that became conversation starters with clients.

It’s also a great place to pick up little thank-you tokens for regulars—like hand-poured candles or handmade soaps. It’s nice to support fellow independents while personalising my service.

🍻 Evening Unwind: Wild Card Brewery or Big Penny Social

By the time I’ve wrapped up my final house call around 6 or 7pm, I’m ready to slow things down. If I’ve got a friend meeting me after work or just need to exhale, I head to Wild Card Brewery or Big Penny Social. Both are perfect for a wind-down pint and people-watching. Wild Card has more of that edgy, local-artisan feel, while Big Penny is open and family-friendly with rotating events.

Occasionally I’ll bump into clients (always lovely!) or even get asked for a spontaneous fringe trim on the terrace. Walthamstow is that kind of place.

💬 Final Thoughts

Walthamstow is more than a postcode on my calendar—it’s a place that feels like a microcosm of everything I love about London: creativity, connection, and good coffee. Whether I’m dashing between homes or taking a breather in the park, it’s an area that feeds my soul and my business.

And if you’re ever in the neighbourhood and fancy a haircut that comes to you, just say the word—I’m probably nearby with scissors in hand and a flat white not far off.
